Blustery Night

Last night after we had gone to bed we heard a big CRACK! - the unmistakable sound of a large tree limb breaking. I lay there for a few seconds, waiting for the whoosh and thud of it hitting the ground. Now anyone who has been to our house knows we have huge cottonwood trees lining the back of our yard, but on the opposite side of the fence. It is a love-hate relationship. They provide us with glorious shade during the summer (the backyard is a good 10 degrees cooler than the front), and tons of leaves in the fall. Being as big and old as they are, however, causes us (and our neighbors) some concern. There is one tree in particular that is pretty much dead, and is tilting towards our neighbors house. It sways a lot in the wind and creaks loudly. So when we heard the big crack last night, we jumped out of bed and turned on our back light to see if we could see anything, as did the neighbors. No limbs down as far as I can see, but after last night and with wind in the forecast for the next few days, I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for falling branches (or trunks for the matter.)
When we lived in Idaho four or five years ago we had a windstorm that brought down a huge elm tree in our yard. I have pictures somewhere, I'll have to see if I can dig them up. Ahh.. here they are:GD62: I'm grateful that we live close enough to Daniel's school to be able to walk there on glorious days like today. Too bad it is supposed to snow this weekend! Spring in Utah - gotta love it!
