Evan's doctor appointment today went well. If you don't count the hour and a half (plus) that we spent in the waiting room. His doctor (Dr. Schmelzer) was running a little behind. Seeing as he was running so far behind, he did seem to be in a hurry when examining Evan's thumbs, but I feel confident in his abilities. He told us that Evan's right thumbs will be more complicated to fix than his left one, but both should heal fine and he should have no lingering effects. He recommended getting them fixed before he was six months old so his normal thumbs could stop compensating for them. The sooner the better. We agreed & scheduled his surgery for the 30th of May. We could have had it done this Friday, but Gary's parents are going to be in town and Evan has a PT appointment that day. I had been expecting he would have surgery at a year old, like our pediatrician (Dr. Allred) said, so I am in a bit of shock that it will be so soon. Dr. Allred said they would wait until he was a year old so they could put him under general anesthesia. But our plastic surgeon (Dr. Schmelzer) said he can be put under now. Yes, that's right folks, our four-month old is having plastic surgery! A good thing about the visit is that Dr. Schmelzer said he has never had an insurance company not cover this type of surgery. He said since it is congenital (meaning he was born with it) that it will be covered. That is less worry for us.
Dr. Schmelzer also made mention that Evan will need a helmet. We told him that we were going to PT and would get in to see the Neurosurgeon after PT is done. Dr. Schmelzer recommended Evan getting his helmet when he is six months old, so in roughly 5 weeks.

Good Luck with evrything, that is a lot for such a little baby. I hope everything goes well.
Wow! Plastic surgery. I guess I can understand why they would want to get it done and over with. The helmet is coming up soon. How long will he have to wear it? The daycare boy that I have had to wear his for about 3 months and also got his when he was 6 months.
I love primary children's...is that where they are doing the surgery? That place is amazing, your little guy will be in good hands.
